‘They’re certainly leading me a dance.’

Xander and Imogen had been with Amelie for a week now, and his announcement that he had yet to see the otters was becoming a regular occurrence as the three of them (or sometimes two, when Imogen decided that day was a fast day, and that she wouldn’t eat until evening) met up at breakfast.

‘Isn’t there a way to coax them out?’ Amelie spread a blob of jam onto her toast. ‘Like leave them treats or something.’

Xander shook his head. ‘I don’t want to start that – they need to hunt their own food. I really can’t interfere at all; I’m just there to observe and make the best plans for them and their survival. I just have to be patient – I know they’re there; I’ve seen the evidence.’ He sipped his coffee.

‘So where do you think they are? Do you know the spot or is it just a rough idea? Is it where we saw the slide on the riverbank?’

‘Their territory can be a long stretch along the river. I’ve seen signs of them – like the slide – but I’m not yet sure where I’ll actually see them. I’m hopeful for one particular location.’

‘Where’s that?’ Amelie asked. ‘I’d probably know it if you can describe it.’

He raised his eyebrows. ‘Really? Just from a description? I’d only know from map coordinates or something.’

‘You forget, I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve walked that riverbank often enough to know every tree.’

‘In that case, it’s by the straggly green one.’

‘Funny,’ Amelie said with a grin.

‘Sorry,’ he said. ‘Actually, there’s a bend in the river and a little islet… quite dense reeds and a pair of oak trees.’

‘Hmm…’ Amelie spooned some more jam on her toast. ‘The spot isn’t springing to mind, but I think I could work it out if I went down there to look. I might take a look; I’d actually like to see them. If I can find them, of course. I mean, you’re the expert and you haven’t managed to see them in the flesh yet.’

He shrugged. ‘I’m not too worried at the moment. Sooner or later they’ll show themselves. I can wait, however long it takes.’

‘You’ve got more patience than I’d have.’

‘Patience comes with the job. Nature doesn’t appear to order, and if you can’t deal with that then it’s probably not the job for you.’

‘It’s not the job for me then,’ Amelie said, reaching for another slice of toast from her mum’s antique rack that she’d only started to use since she’d been having breakfast with her new lodgers. ‘I love animals and I don’t mind the odd afternoon by the river, but I’d soon get fed up waiting around. I would love to see one, though. It must be so special. My mum used to have sharp eyes when it came to spotting wildlife, but she definitely never mentioned seeing otters in these parts – I’d remember if she had. My wellies would have been straight on so she could take me to see them.
